“In a gentle way, you can shake the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi
Comprised out of MS metal, blown glass and a base lined with rock salt this 3-dimensional mid-century modern installation is a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birthday. The modern and simplistic design is a representation of Gandhi’s character, a man who lived his life with honesty and humility. As a champion for human rights through non-violence he is a man respected and cherished by the world for being one of the most inspirational figures of all time.
The tribute drew inspiration from the iconic metal round shaped spectacles and the non-violent salt march to the sea of Dandi. It was important to add these elements to the tribute as these are some of the moments in history that have defined his legacy as a true savior of the Indian people.
The spectacles are brought to life in the details of the metal framework, the added mirror pieces and the circular geometric shapes and lines. The symbolic rock salt can be found as a layer on the base. From the front view these shapes and lines form the word ‘Ahimsa’, and as the viewer moves from the front to the side and diagonal angle, they are able to appreciate the 3-dimensional characteristic of the installation.
